Can Red Light Therapy Help With Hair Loss?

Low-level light therapy for androgenetic alopecia has a real, if modest, evidence base. Here is what the trials actually measured — and what a device needs to get right.

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) for hair loss is one of the better-studied uses of red and near-infrared light outside of skin — several sham-controlled randomized trials exist, and the direction of the evidence is consistently positive, if modest.

#What the trials measured

A 24-week randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial on a low-level light device for androgenetic alopecia found a statistically significant increase in hair density in the treated group compared with sham (Fan et al., 2018). A subsequent systematic review and meta-analysis pooling multiple randomized trials reached a similar conclusion: LLLT produces a measurable increase in hair density versus sham devices, with a favourable safety profile (Liu et al., 2019).

That is a genuinely useful evidence base for a non-invasive, non-drug intervention — but it is worth being precise about what "works" means here. The trials measure hair density (hairs per square centimetre), not dramatic regrowth of a bald scalp. LLLT is best understood as a way to slow thinning and modestly improve density in early-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia, not a treatment for advanced hair loss or other causes of hair loss entirely.

#The wavelengths behind it

Most studied and commercially available LLLT hair devices use red light around 650–660 nm, sometimes combined with near-infrared around 830–850 nm — the same general bands with clinical support in the skin literature, applied to the scalp instead.
