The gap between what LED hair devices are marketed as and what the clinical trials actually measured is where most disappointment comes from. Setting the right expectation before buying is arguably more useful than the device itself.

#What the trials measured — and what they didn’t

Randomized, sham-controlled trials on low-level light therapy for androgenetic alopecia measure hair density — hairs counted per square centimetre of scalp, typically using standardised photography — before and after a treatment period, usually 16–24 weeks (Fan et al., 2018). A meta-analysis pooling multiple such trials confirms a statistically significant increase in density versus sham devices (Liu et al., 2019). #Reading a brand’s own results claim
