Same underlying light therapy, three very different form factors. Here is what actually changes between a cap, a comb and a helmet — and what doesn’t.

LLLT hair devices come in three common shapes — caps, combs and helmets — and the marketing rarely explains that the underlying light therapy is the same across all three. What differs is coverage, comfort and how consistently you will actually use it.

#Combs

Combs require you to manually pass the device over sections of the scalp, which means coverage depends entirely on technique and patience. They are typically the cheapest option and easiest to travel with, but the most likely to deliver an inconsistent dose session to session — a rushed pass covers less scalp, and it is hard to know how much you missed.

#Caps and helmets

Both are worn hands-free with LEDs distributed across the scalp, delivering a more consistent dose without requiring technique. Helmets tend to offer more even top-of-scalp coverage since they hold a fixed shape; caps are typically lighter, more flexible to fit different head sizes, and easier to wear for a full session while doing something else — which matters, because the trials behind this therapy used consistent sessions several times a week for months. A device you actually wear beats a technically superior one left in a drawer.

#Coverage vs comfort is the real trade-off

There is no form factor that is objectively best — a helmet with excellent top coverage that sits uncomfortably and gets used twice a week will underperform a comb used religiously, and vice versa. The most useful question to ask before buying any of the three is honest: which one will you actually wear for the full session, consistently, for months? The trials behind this category (Fan et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019) depended on consistent use — the device that gets used beats the device with the best spec sheet on paper.
