Photobiomodulation 101: The Science Behind Red Light Devices

The umbrella term behind red light therapy, low-level laser therapy and most consumer LED devices, explained without the jargon.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the umbrella scientific term for what most consumer marketing calls "red light therapy" or "LED light therapy." Knowing the underlying framework makes it much easier to evaluate any specific device’s claims.

#What the term actually covers

PBM refers to the use of red or near-infrared light — from LEDs or low-level lasers — to influence cellular activity without generating meaningful heat, unlike higher-powered lasers used in surgical or ablative treatments. The core proposed mechanism involves light absorption by mitochondrial chromophores, particularly cytochrome c oxidase, which is thought to influence cellular energy production and downstream signalling (Avci et al., 2013). This is the same underlying science behind both skin devices and hair devices — the target tissue differs, but the mechanism proposed is the same.

#Why dose is the central variable

PBM research consistently points to a biphasic dose-response relationship: too little light does not produce an effect, but past an optimal point, more light energy does not keep helping and can flatten or reverse the benefit (Huang et al., 2009). This is the single most important thing to understand about how these devices are supposed to work, and it is also the most commonly ignored fact in consumer marketing, where "more LEDs" is treated as an unambiguous selling point.

A device that discloses all three lets you actually evaluate whether its protocol resembles what the published trials used. A device that discloses none of them — just LED count and a colour name — is asking you to trust the marketing instead.
